Nicholas Bellefleur

Montreal-based choreographer and interdisciplinary artist, I create immersive experiences that blur the boundaries of the living, artificality and integrity of space and time. My work is rooted in the body: a queer, virtuosic, sensitive, mutant body - traversed by memory, desire, technologies and systems of power.

I'm interested in social f(r)ictions, the invisible architectures that shape our gestures, and the potential for transformation that emerges when we leave room for the unstable. My approach is guided by somatic listening, attention to the sensitive, and a willingness to subvert norms with tenderness and radicalism.

Last december, I co-founded the creative space proto studio

I create dances and experiences.

I tell stories with and through my own body and others.

I lead groups and communities into empowering themselves through praxis.

I also write.

I continue to recreate myself constantly, thanks to the aesthetics and praxis of my collaborators. Recently I embodied the athletic and conceptual works of Andrea Peña & Artists at La Biennale di Venezia and Tanzmesse, the brutally poetic physicality of Virginie Brunelle at Lugano Arte e Cultura, and the provocative ideas and practices of Dave St-Pierre at FIERTÉ MTL, the eco-somatic eroticism of Sébastien Provencher at Festival TransAmériques (FTA) and the theatrical, neopunk choreography of Wynn Holmes / LFDT at Espace GO which I facilitate the choreographic tools and technologies of improvisations ‘LFDTCLASS’ open to bodies of all abilities.

Performance as practice.

I invest in performance as a practice of liberation. My work examines the collective unconscious, emphasizing the complexity and magnificence of the human experience. Intimately linked to my queer and neurodivergent perspective, I tend to interweave different choreographic modules; decupling, overlapping, circumventing and imploding the codes of performance.

My work celebrates the living through performances, workshops and creative gatherings: punk and ecological ballets, choreographic anthologies, private coaching, performance workshops, happenings...
