Nicholas Bellefleur

Montreal-based choreographer and interdisciplinary artist, I create immersive experiences that blur the boundaries of the living, artificality and integrity of space and time. My work is rooted in the body: a queer, virtuosic, sensitive, mutant body - traversed by memory, desire, technologies and systems of power.

Both a laboratory and a choreographic creation, A SAFE(R) SPACE was born of a need to establish new modes of artistic creation inspired by queer theories, LGBTQ+ cultures and dance therapy.

Brought together on stage by a shared desire to build a safe space, bodies play, jostle, tense up and support each other in this contemporary queer ballet, troubled and doped with hope. Questioning their relationship to choreography, 6 performers navigate structures of oppression and liberation, in search of spaces that allow them a radically fluid and supportive authenticity.

A quest for the impossible, a queer utopia, a constant negotiation of expression torn by internal desires and systemic forces, ASS reveals itself to us as an ode to the complexity of the world, the beauty of continuing to question one's individual and collective identity, and the fleeting vision of an inclusive revolution.

The project has benefited from a number of invaluable supports, including a first run at the Festival Quartiers Danses, a research laboratory at Danse à la Carte, a grant from the Volontariat Artistique program of Jeunesse-Emploi Montréal, a grant from Jeunes en Action / Rising Youth, alliances with the LGBTQ+ Community Center of Montreal and the Centre National de Danse-Thérapie affiliated with Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, two creation residencies and an online broadcast at Vue sur la Relève, a creative residency offered by Cas Public, financial support from the Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Québec (CALQ), the Canada Council for the Arts via Lo Fi Dance Theory, and financial support and presentation at Tangente. It takes a village!
